"So" is a great album and stands the test of time. I wonder however, with such a shift in direction from previous records, did the PG super fans feel betrayed or left behind with a move to a more "pop" sound vs previous records?
For example, I suppose "Shock the Monkey" was dipping a toe into the more mainstream pool, but the music video was still clearly Gabriel. Songs like San Jancinto and the Rhythm of the Heat were also more like the PG we all knew well. Nothing on this album would be overly "pop" in nature.
However, the likes of "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time" (both great tracks) must have been quite a shocker to long time fans. The incredible "Mercy Street" and "Red Rain" would've gone a long way to offset the shock - but could these PG fans not have been a fan of an album that is now considered a classic by many today?
Just curious what others might think.
