Have you tried John Eliot Gardiner? I like his period stuff but he did Schumann with the LSO, supposed to be pretty good.I'm trying again to get into the Robert Schumann symphonies.
It's been a half century longstruggleendeavour, and I'm trying again atm.
Any recommendations for recordings?
Currently getting some of my best results so far from ancient stereo Kubelik on DG.
The recent Alsop Mahler orchestrations on Naxos kicked off the new attempt.
Others sampled this morning (insomnia strikes again) -
Zinman, Gielen, Tilson Thomas, Karajan, Butt, Solti.
My issues with the Schumann symphonies - I generally find them thematically trite and developmentally uninteresting.
Clearly I'm missing the point, as greater minds than mine have greatly admired them!
...hmmm, the Kubelik Schumann 3rd is almost convincing me that it's worth listening to atm.
