So, just settling down and turning on the HiFi for the evening. I now realise that my switch on process is so convoluted that I’ll have to leave instructions in my will
!
First plug in the AC regenerator (the fans on idle are noisy, so keep unplugged). Then take the lid off the TT and stow half way across the room (away from sound reflections). This works as the regenerator takes 10 seconds to get going. Reach way under the rack to feel for the switch for the TT power supply. Next flick the switch on the Vida PS, then the valve pre pausing for a few seconds to hear the soft start gradually let the transformer hum emerge.
Then, if I’ve not played the system for a few days, I’ll delve behind the speakers to make sure the Velcro holding the external crossovers has not failed again…press firmly back in place.
Now to the John Wood KT88. I still find it an intimidating, frankly, scary thing. A check of the connection behind, no potential shorts?, then flick the power and stand back, it’s a bit like proding a dragon to wake it up.
……Wait 10 mins while the KT88’s warm through….
Still need to select an an LP, clamp it down, brush the stylus, sweep clean the record, cue the tonearm, lower the stylus….
….Set the pre volume
….Un-mute the VIDA
and if you are lucky, sound emerges…
You are all as bad, aren’t you?
