ok, i have an HP prolient surplus, which i want to use to store my photographs/home videos.

What would you suggest for an operating system and software for the tasks,i don't want it used for any other process, i already have my music on a nas unit, laptop for day today work etc.

So other than windows 7 and windows server which i have, what would you advise.

Thanks for looking.

Windows Home Server makes perfect sense IMV Simon, I'd just go with that if I already had it TBH. :^

I like windows 7 too, but haven't tried 8 as yet, many peeps seem to prefer W7. Given the undemanding nature of your intended role I'm pretty sure W.S. should be more than up to the task in any case.

Although I have WHS v1, I would not recommend any iteration of WHS now as it's clear that Microsoft don't have it in their long term plans.

WHS2011 is their latest, and Server2012 Essentials is not aimed at the home user.

TBH Win8 (and 7) clients have everything needed to work as a basic server.

If you want to try something different and more suited to the low CPU power of the HP I would take a look at unRAID.

Why not put the videos and photos on you NAS, btw?
