I've been for the last week or so listening to Diamond III's on the end of my hifi, and just love the charm of a small speaker, now I'm wondering how I better this? With staying in a similar size speaker?

I still concur, Diamond's shouldn't sound as good as they do!

Ah yes, you've asked the right spud-box-loving man:D. In order of ascending RRPs, these are the small speakers I like...

All measure under 300mm tall, but they are still a good ten inches. Take your pick!

Kans - when driven by an amp that'll grab them by their throats and make them behave. I aboslutely love 'em - despite the fact that there are times I want to set fire to them. On the right material they're brilliant. On the wrong stuffthey're shit.

The Decca London of the speaker world - and all the better for it.

diamonds are an all time great speaker imho.

what you must remember having high quality speakers only puts pressure on amplification and source.

you put 10ks worth of speaker on a midi and it will sound shite. now put a set of diamonds on the end of a 10k amp and source and bingo you will have a great sound.

thats my opinion anyway and i have tried these methods and for me source then amp then speakers. all imho of course.

Thinking of trying out a single full-range design in a monitor enclosure...

Some Fostex would do nicely...

Haven't heard a pair of Daimonds for twenty years, when a mate had them in his first system.

If you fancy a monitor-style sound in a robust box, you can't go wrong with a pair of JBL Control 1s, brand new and boxed for £60 off eBay.

Just bought a couple of pairs of AV duties and like them so much I'm getting another pair for the receiver I have in the kitchen.

Had a pair of Wharfedales Programme 30D's once and imo they sounded somewhat better than diamonds. Strange coz as far as I could tell, they were exactly the same speaker but made for commercial purposes (pubs hotels etc) so not in as nicer cabinet...

wish I'd never sold em now.

Bought for £6 of the bay about 18 months ago, brand new boxed !!

oh well, keep lookin !

30d aren't as good ime, ive heard most of the diamond range but the 9.1's

III's are the best, 1 and 2 are a bit light as they use a chipboard case, III's have a good mdf cabinet.

Might try Kan's, with kans i can always sell them again.

Pair of Systym 931 or 935. Place a wanted add on eBay you never know.

Each recieved 5 star reviews and they both have a magic with the 935 being larger and slightly warmer sounding.

If you can find a pair their are the Radford Tristars a bookshelf loudspeaker that isnt

Ah, I have a spare pair of SYSTYM 931'S - blond ash finish, exceptional build quality - I believe they became ART's - or at least there is a stong connection via the designers- happy to demo etc

Had someone interested before but he needed the copy of the What Hi Fi review from 1993/1994 - unfortunately still not got around to scanning it so I guess he may have lost interest?

Also have Wharfedale 8.1's which I use occassionaly for a change of sound - must admit that for their price (120 but discounted to 80) they are hard to beat - I bought these for my daughter to use but as she refuses to throw away her Brazt collection there is currently no room to set them up permanemtly - if anyone is interested I may let them go - as new condition

BTW the Yanks appear to love the small Epos speakers (3LR or something) and Usher 520's = I would like to hear these though there are no delears near enough for me to pester

The R16's are lovely sounding speakers for the money. Very smooth and natural. Well built too.

I've been playing around with Cambridge Audio's dinky S30's recently. They sound very nice for the money too (£120).Hardly anyof the shrill trebleor mid-bass overhang one usually encounters withspeakers at this price. A very pleasent surprise: http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/summary.php?PID=213&Title=S30+loudspeaker

My mk2 Diamondshave no right to sound half as good as my Dyn Contour 1.3 mk2s, but they do. That's the law of diminishing returns for ya.

They do have a cheap chipboard cab though, which doesn't seem to resonate much.

Probably cos they are so small.
