What's likely to have a valve pre play in only one channel?...

Don't say one speaker... right hand channel driver serious excursion then a dull bang, thought driver had gone tits up, but no. There's a transformer for each channel they seem fine, although ones running notably cooler than the other prolly as one sides now doing nothing, all the valves light up, I know without the circuit topology its nigh on impossible, but expecting a lady visitor next week, my repair chaps on his jollies and I need to dust off the Sade albums...

Hehe its been a while... Anyhoo swapped valves side to side no difference, there's equal slight hum in both channels as always, something is just stopping the music coming through on the right side. There's separate trannies for left and right but all is lit up...

Much as I would like to help with some technical advice... it isnt quite my strongest point!!

BUT.... I may be able to help with setting the mood right on the big night.

ie do you want to borrow an amp.

Sugden A21a integrated available. Sade and Barry White will never sound so good.

Or, I have a little pre on loan from Paul/Pgarrish. Im sure he wont mind, as it is such an important cause.

Chris, you can borrow the Pre Brian has or I have one here you can come and get (or arrange transport). It only has one input but it works very well - PM me.

Are the channels using separate valves per side or do they share dual valves?

If the former you can simply swap left and right signal valves and see if the problem switches to the other side. Perhaps use spare/inexpensive loudspeakers if to hand, or headphones (off the head in this case!) to test.

Brian, Paul, Rick... Cheers Chaps as ever... and Chris thanks for the analogy. Quite fancy trying the suggy I must say, thanks for stepping into the fray as ever. Re the pre... Rob it uses twin transformers and twin mono boards with separate valves. Done the swappy thing and still no sound on the right channel yet all the valves are lit, I'll drop some piccies on here later. Theres a rectangular square component between the output rca's, the back of the case on which this is mounted did feel very hot.

Perhaps a muting relay thats failed 'on' and is therefore getting hot.Whack up some pics later.
Pics now removed to respect copyright as he's a mate of mine but away at the mo. Thanks for the answer Rob

Regardless of swapping RCA Pairs, right channel still dead, don't think its anything major, just annoying.

Sorry about the dust, really not skanky at all just the way the camera has lit it!

The little black box close to the output sockets is indeed a relay and probably used to mute output while the circuit stabilises or inputs are switched.

Good chance thats 'stuck' or failed if everything else looks to be ok, including what's driving the relay. That's where I'd look first.

Looks like a nice bit of kit.

Sorted. Could have bought a pack of blue ones for not much, but such is my vanity I sourced another black one for more! Judging by the heat on the back panel I think this is a logical assumption Rob, I was hoping someone with some techy nouse would say it was this. Sorry not been returning calls tonight people, tired out from rowing machine and now need to do "chores"... Cheers Rob!!!
