Where can I find 5mm LED XC5053 to suit Quad 405?

hi folks,

I need some advice. The LED on the front panel of a quad 405 is shown as XC5053R. I have been told this is not the same LED as the NTE3030. Apparently the XC5053 has a higher forward voltage.

Can anyone recommend where I can get a couple of these LEDs in blue and green with a diffuse lense.

Hi,

A higher forward voltage drop will not normally matter. If it was the same colour LED it would just be less bright, However a blue LED tends to be more intense so that may not be a problem.

Although Blue leds look nice, I find them too intence and useully end up increasing the series resistor, or sticking something over the front of the led to reduce thier light output.

To calculate the value (assuming its not already made for 12V etc) you take the supply voltage (say 24) minus the LED voltage (Say 3) equals 21 volts.

This 21 volts needs to be dtropped across a series resistor and its calcuklated by choosing the LED current (say 10mA for full Brightness) and dividing the voltage drop (21) by the current 10mA, and the answer will be in Kilo Ohms of restance. eg 21 divited by 10 equals 2.1 K ohms. If you choose 5mA to make it less bright it would be 4.2K 25ma would be 0.84K or 840 ohms. Sometimes I find it easy just to have a handfull of resistors and go down in value until you get the required brghtness, so long as you dont exceed the maximum current of the LED.

I use a voltage divider to give me more control, and use some fine wet'n'dry on the front of the clear types to diffuse them. Anyway, blue is so passe, I'm going over to purple.
