Which phono stage do you think would be a decent step up from a Dino/ncps?. Not that I'm complaining, as it sounds pretty damn good to me. But as with everything, I'm sure there are other levels of good.

I usually buy used, budget of £1k ota. Current cart is a Benz ls.

How much is that Sonneteer one Paul has? Got good reviews :^
Not sure Rob. I shall ask :^

I recently went from a Dino/NCPSU (which I loved) to a EE Minimax valve 'stage at a bit over £800 used. ..... :^ :)
I'm enjoying your old stage a lot Jerry. But the bug is nipping at my wallet, wondering how to improve etc :D I really should behave myself. But, well, you know...........

I've heard the minimax and its a substantial upgrade to the dino especially if using MC cart, the built in transformers are great. Its exactly the phono I would be after if I didn't already have a great SUT. However the dino (I have the plus power supply) with hashimoto HM3 SUT into the MM setting sounds better IMHO than the Minimax. Its one of the biggest improvements I've made so I would suggest a 'good' SUT especially as you already have the NCPSU.

The 2-box Ming Da 2006 is also very good indeed - quite a similar sound to the Minimax.

--- I think the Icon PS3 is the same beastie?

For a rather more ballsy, upfront, 'take no prisoners' sound, the Tom Evans Groove is also well worth a listen.

For me it misses the valvey magic openness of the Minimax and Ming Da, though.

My Vacuum State JLTi kicks butt. I was going to say 'especially when used with the Axia', but that is an unrequired caveat. The JLTi just kicks butt.

Given funds, I might upgrade to ob1's Soundsmith, but that ain't happening any time soon.

Scroll down this page for more details and reviews.

In addition. It's well worth trying. Uses little transformers to boost the mc signal up to mm level. A lot of people prefer the sound to an mc stage.

Good idea!
:^

Rick the EAR834P I use hasn't got any transformers in it, it's MM/HOMC only, but as you heard with divedeepdogs Garrard/Audio Technica MC it will work, but probably not optimally..
