I'm thinking I should probably get some platforms for my tannoys. The home-made granite chopping boards + sticks of platfoam stands I have *would* fit perfectly under the bases. However the tops are obviously marble, the Tannoys have smooth brass feet on the bases and I've tried before, they slip around all over the place. Added to the fact they are 36KG and my Dalis were wobbly enough on the supports - I'm thinking I should just buy a couple of their product as they have different tops and won't slide about as much.

Dimensions of the speakers are 17.9 inches x 14.4.

I looked at the gramma just now after reading the 'what does make a difference?' thread and they're far too big. 2 feet long!

Does auralex actually made a product that will fit a bit closer? Have to be for sale in the UK too as the propad XL still isn't.

Cheers. I do think they'd sound better on supports than straight on the floorboards like they are now, but hopefully with the real products they won't wobble and slide as much.

:minikev: as always. :?

Looks like its the propad xl which is a couple cm bigger width and length wise, now to find a uk seller.

I hope they aren't too wobbly.

What about some sorbothane sheets from eBay? something like this

Cut into small squares, will compress between the brass feet and plinth, but allow the friction required to stop the slipping.

Not a bad idea, but the homemade platfoam supports are *really* wobbly. I'd hope the propads would be a bit more solid ... somehow :?

But maybe not.

In the positions they are now, believe it or not 3 inches each side might be a bit difficult. Would be cheaper though and I guess I could rearrange a bit.

The standard Gramma is 23" x 15".

Is that really a mismatch?

By the time the speaker is 1" in from the front, that's only 4" for cables to wall. :?

Edit - see I was beaten to it.

If you check my system pic you'll see why. The 15" depth is fine but its being almost 2 feet long that's the issue.. sadly.

Older pic. Now moved the cd rack and brought them forward a bit. The only thing I could do is move the white shelves which I can't put anywhere else really, and it made little difference without them there I tried it last weekend. In its current position the right gramma would hit a door and the left would not fit. Hence I'd like a base with a closer fit :)

Sorry Shaun, be pleased to have a look.

Only making the point since I'm a fan of Gramma, too.

Just fits a Q/spire Q4 on my wobbly collander floor :^ , and reckon it's more stable than the other products.

Subdude is 15 x 15. Three flying inches?

Edit - seen the pic, ta.

Even larger Tannoys to fit the Grammas must be the answer. :D

The actual bases of the tannoys are almost perfect for the chopping boards too. 40x30cm. I did put one on to try and it was asking for trouble. They made a big difference with the dalis though so I'd like to get or try some with these.

Subdudes might be perfect actually as long as they have the same anti slip coating.

What do the platforms actually do Shaun?

Not actually sure what sorbothane is but would sheets of butyl rubber be of any use?

Its the Gramma's that I have placed under my speakers, I have tried adding some pictures but can't get it to work - aaarrrrgggghhhhh.

The speakers are a little wobbly if you push them but don't move in action and would not fall over!!!

The difference was quite significant which I know is floor dependant but I have floorboards covered with 12mm ply, treadaire colours red underlay (the best I found after lots of research for sound isolation) and wool carpet. The sound has opened up and cleaned up (excuse my lack of technical jargon).

I used the pro pads under my centre, a pair is £79.99 and due to the size of my centre I use both although they are designed for studio monitors. The speech from my centre has really improved.

I am going to try the pro pads under some other equipment and may try a pair under my main speakers as the propads are so well built I am curious.

I will dig out my receipt because the dealer was great and as posted on another thread they were happy to take them back if I was not happy.

Equipment aside these have made the biggest difference to my system.

are you on a phone? Always does it to me but looks fine on my laptop.

going to try find some subdudes or 2/hds. If anyone local wants to try my home made ones you can have them for free but they aren't the prettiest looking. They do work though!

I use bare lengths of platfoam directly under my (approx. 45cm square) Tannoy Arundels, one length cut down to exactly fit the width of the speaker base at the front and back edge, with the bit left over of the platfoam length cut in half, then placed under the side edges nearest the front. Can be made to wobble if you rock it but it just sits there otherwise. You can slide the Tannoys around on the floor if you push them at the bottom of the cabinets and the speakers show no signs of sliding off the platfoam. Not sure if that would work for you but does the job fine for me.
