Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I have a Primare A32 driving Dynaudio Contour 1.8mk2 speakers. The left speaker is 3.5m from the amp, the right 1.5m.

My budget is around £400 for new or used speaker cable. Any suggestions?

First off as the electric signal travel at almost the speed of light the different lengths will make no audible difference. However to stop your mind playing games get the same length for each side. As to a £400 budget .. well if it was me I would take a nought off and get these which have over 500 strands of OFC cable

Are you likely to move things around in the future?

A little too much cable won't cause any harm today but might save you some cash in the future.

Also, exactly what do you mean by "3.5M from the amp"? Is that a nice neat and discrete cable run or a point-to-point straight line?

I'm not likely to move anything. But it probably help resale value if it same length. The 3.5m is a nice neat cable run.

Many thanks.

The terminals are close to the floor on your speakers.

It might be worth allowing for a future change of floor-stander wherein the terminals are positioned much higher.

Just a thought....

I won't be replacing the speakers. I'm happy with the sound of them.

I'm not sure it's the speed of propagation of the signal that causes longer runs of cable to sound different...

Nice speakers. I had a pair driven by a Krell KAV400xi amp and used Chord Co Odyssey cables to good effect. These days I use Tellurium Q Black II which are excellent.

It isn't, or won't be.

Any audible differences between speaker cables (and any other wire) will be effects that directly relate to the electrical/physical properties of the cable. Things like inductance, resistance and capacitance will vary depending on the length.

The most compelling argument for having same-length cables, however, is that they're massively easier to resell.

I see Fullrange was sad at my response - as my chosen leads are inexpensive perhaps he would like to try some and confirm they actually make him sad.

If I win the lottery and have ten grand to waste I might get some Dram Silver cables (made using Kondo silver wires) for mine as they did sound a tad clearer and faster than my usual cables.

If you have a local hifi dealer it may be worth asking if you can borrow a few pairs of different cables. Prob have to put a deposit but...

IME cables didn't make a difference until 4 yrs ago when I tried some NVA on sale/return.

With my Denon amp they just made a silly difference. I still can't believe it. But with my previous Exposure amp they made no difference whatsoever.

@rabski has it right, differing properties will affect amp/speakers er.. differently.

Try before you buy, if poss.

I have a pair of Van Den Hul CS122 that you can try, a 4.5m and a 3m terminated with banana plugs. These are the hybrid ones. Clean and working. Lots of good and indifferent reviews, to me they are very even handed not bright and will tame a bright system slightly.
