I've read some where that removing unwanted programs and stipping back windows 7 is beneficial, if ant body can shed any light on which section/programs of windows seven can be removed and how to go about it.

It's just an experiment i want to try, having a spare laptop doing nothing, it will give me something to play about with. All i'll need would be the basic o/s to run JRiver.

Thanks for looking

My personal opinion is that it can't make any difference. Make sure you are using WASAPI or ASIO so that Windows isn't upsampling, downsampling or whatever.

But the rest is just audiophilia nervosa. Nobody has come up with a credible reason why stripping it back would be beneficial other than waving their arms around a lot.

My JRiver running on a dual core Atom with 2Mb Ram and Windows XP Pro uses no more than 2% of the processor plus 1% for my Remote desktop session. I can't see how reducing any services is going to make any difference to the sound. The machine is barely ticking over as it is .

As long as your output is 'bit perfect' and arrives as it was sent. I don't think the composition and configuration of whatever is generating it really matters.

Could be a toaster full of jelly, powered by telekinetic space monkeys.

Which incidentally is my preferred method.

As long as the computer is powerful enough to output the digital or audio stream without errors, this stuff about it being a good idea to remove other Windows processes is just total and utter bollocks spouted by delusional idiots.

The CPU is always going to be doing something, and it's as valid to claim that it's better to keep it awake with lots of work, than to remove load and let it start entering power saving modes in an idle loop!

Outside Paisley now,
Tried Foobar running wasapi? Easy to check everything is "bit perfect", also it has very low cpu useage, mine is showing 1% right now on Windows 7 playing a Flac via usb into M-DAC.Love it.

Good luck. Basic clean install/re-install of many legal Windows including 7 (I have done 7 x 3 times on 3 sys) helps all.

For your particular requirement/ probably a safely e.g. MSE'd updated-scanned sys will be as good as you can achieve (usually fine).
