In 1984 I got my first real hifi . Yes it was a midi system made up of Kenwood and Trio . Why did I buy it . Well the answer is I love music . So I wanted a conduit , pure and simple . The current threads being posted here are about measurements . They have their place of course but where is the passion of music . Even when well respected members of the industry chip in to advise some of you are oblivious . There is technical advice here in abundance but even those far more enlightened than me like Rab and Beobloke its not enough . This forum under admin and mods will always be a broad church but we have always been in agreement . We are here because of the music and the path we all take is different but goal is the same. Build a system and blow my socks of with my favourite music .

Not trying to be tiresome but what is the question; what has happened to what?
X really not trying to stir up anything bad!

I share OP's view that music trumps measurements for me. Though I don't much mind if anyone also wants to peruse things with an oscilloscope. It's very (very) possible that I have poorer sound than many here. I've been to other folks' houses and heard better than what I have and sometimes think about getting better (especially a better turntable), but I feel more motivated to just play music.

I freely admit discussions around measurements go right over my head. I have ambitions particularly in the turntable department but house improvements and bills in general will likely put place to that. Plus I rarely get the opportunity to play records so justifying any change is difficult. But, my system sounds pretty good to me given the investment and I do enjoy my music on it. And that's what matters.

I recognise this and actually wish I'd acquired some things for improvement a few years ago when it was more possible. Such as a top quality cassette deck. I actually have a really good one in England at my father's house, but he started using it and now I'd feel bad taking it away. It's also harder to transport stuff. Back in the early 2000s I actually just carried an amplifier onto a ferry between UK-Belgium, without a peep out of anyone, and that was just after 9/11!

I'm even more confused o_O
Anyway, tomorrow's another day, hopefully the "science" will have abated, thankfully scientists have made sure the Internet is sufficiently robust to continue, and music will have ascended; so things can only get better? (apologies to Tony).

For those without an oscilloscope they don't tell you what good music sounds like when well reproduced - in that respect they're pretty useless really, but when it sounds bad they do help you to understand why it sounds bad, that's quite helpful to us DIYers.

Peace to all music lovers, and even those who don't love the arts

This (the 'scope bit).

I may have a science background, and I do measure some things. I need to when I build stuff, or I'll end up breaking expensive things. I also like fireworks, but I prefer them not to be a part of valve circuits.

But... I build it because it gives me a gateway to stuff that I otherwise couldn't afford, or justify the cost of. And the purpose of it is to listen to music I love. I'll happily admit that the electronics side is effectively another hobby, but it's handy that I can combine it. Double the enjoyment basically.

I can understand the mods irritation with subjects brought in from that site, but it's mostly harnless IMO. And usually gets dealt with pretty quickly from folk on here.
Some people are looking for absolutes and the said site provides them.

Many of us know that hifi, like life, has grey areas and measurements aren't always the be all and end all but can they help make a decision when buying kit. As always listening trumps everything and the music is what we're for. I find the music threads excellent and I've bought plenty of music because of posted suggestions.

If the mods want an honest opinion, the foo threads are an irritation and go on for far longer than necessary. That said, they provide some us with an entertaining opportunity to gently troll, especially when in cups. :D

No mate not tiresome and we don't want to censure but if it carries on like a science forum then we will take action
I love music as well , When I got paid for the first time ever what did I do , Went straight into the record shop at Neath station and purchased my first ever LP, Free self titled and I still have it , Also the only way I could listen to it was to buy a very basic record player off my mum's club book and pay it off weekly , Isn't box swapping all about trying to achieve the best sound so you can really enjoy the music you love ? , Modern HiFi is all about science R&D with the makers trying to achieve the best they can from product design , I am sort of shocked that a administrator could make a statment like this , If action is ever taken against people trying to achieve audio nevarna for the love of music I will be the first one out of the tent . Blimey o_O
