First one is always pretty special.
Organised by non other than Jeremy Beadle. When I say "organised" facilities were non existent. Of course the weather was appalling.
But what a stellar lineup.

Friday:
Hawkwind
Dr John,
Wishbone Ash

Saturday:
Incredible String Band
Donovan
Family
Kinks
Captain Beefheart

Sunday:
Brinsley Schwartz
Country Joe
New Riders of Purple Sage
Grateful Dead for 5 -6 hours

Bristol Ashton Court music festival when I was a teen, but first proper festival was Glastonbury in about 1986.
Amazingly I went on my own via hitch hiking, and even more amazingly managed to bump into some friends, in the days before anyone had mobile devices to communicate :)

Stonehenge. Hawkwind 1984. I took acid. Lost 8 hours of my life. Survived Sonic Attack. Never again. Ha youth.

But I still love Hawkwind and play them a lot. Just spent £60 on Discogs for a NM Space Ritual for my new TT. Hope I’m not disappointed.

I might have been there but I'm sure we didn't meet.

Isle of Wight 1970. Stunning list of performers, I was definitely in hippie mode at the time. Hitch hiked down with no camping gear whatsoever.

Myself and a friend made a 'camp fire' outside Jimi Hendrix's caravan in the inner enclosure at the back of the stage.
When Jimi arrived he was in the caravan for a while then came out and sat next to the fire, I was too naive and star struck to say anything.
We were on the side of the stage during his performance.

I went to a few of these that a mate of mine organised.

The re-runs in 2015 and 2016 were interesting. Chris the organiser called all the original attendees for a photo shot. Chris the organiser is wearing the very loud shirt on stage. The picture quality isn't great but its all we could get.

Used to love the festivals. Often wild but always felt a kind of solidarity with like minded folk. It's true in the 70s there was more of an acid thing going on but I enjoyed the characters & smile even now when remembering them. Stopped going in the mid 80s as commercialism killed them...."cough"...as well as the Conservative party. o_O

I used to hitch there too but often had to walk the last 10 miles. I remember after the festival going into Glastonbury & seeing Gong at the town hall....before accepting a bed for the night from a gang of "Moonies". Great times & I had a ball.
* Nik Turner threw some alternative parties around Cardigan that will become folklore in those parts. They were very "alternative" :)

Nik Turner is on the photo I posted. Hard to make him out as he was covering his face  The fella with the Indian headress Cliff sadly passed away last year. I remember at the last get together in 2016 a mate was trying to get a photo lined up of Nik on stage in his cowboy hat and Cliff in the auditorium in his Sitting Bull outfit. All we needed was a construction worker and it would have looked like the Village People.

Mine too 😁

I have a handful of photographs somewhere but here is one with me on it. Spent most of the weekend in a giant orange plastic bag after our tent blew down and was unusable for the bulk of the weekend.

2 of us slept in my 1964 Mini.
Things were so bad I drove home (Horwich) Sunday morning for a bath & some actual food.
Came back in the afternoon to sunshine, Country Joe, NRPS & several hours of The Dead. Amazing stuff.

There is a DVD, have you got it?

Knebworth, 1975. Had been to loads of smaller things before, but that was the first big one. Floyd, Beefheart, Roy Harper, Steve Miller and more. For various reasons associated with youth and consumption of associated stuff, I remember only bits of it. Happy days. Actually, more like 'happy daze'. It was warm and it didn't rain.
