Delving a wee bit into Wammers' photo history here - what was your first camera?

I had one of these...

No built-in light meter (I used a cheapo but actually very effective Russian-built hand-held one) and with one of the worst 50mm lenses ever made - a Domiplan f2.8. I loved that old camera though, in fact I still have it sat in a wardrobe at home, it's in great nick too. Worth about 5 quid probably. :D

Minolta Himatic 7S (I think). Bought in Dubai about 40 years ago, stolen from a hire car in Portugal's Algarve about 15 years ago :( .

Olympus xa-2. 3 focus positions, can't remember how you adjusted exposure, might have been auto apart from the film speed setting. There was a bolt on flash unit.

The clamshell cover kept it safe and pocketable.

After that I had an olympus OM-1n, totally manual, very compact but excellent SLR. I wish they made something like it now, I'd gladly give up autofocus and auto anything in exchange for a full or half-frame camera as small and reliable as the OM-1.

The first camera I bought was one of these Kodak APS cameras:

And I learned photography on my parents Minolta X-300 with a 50mm f1.7 lens:

After that I got into digital with various compacts (Fujifilm A203, Minolta G400, Kyocera S3R) then got a DSLR and a Minolta 5D/Sigma 30mm f1.4 was the obvious choice. After that came the Fuji X10, Sigma DP1X and now the Pentax K-7.

I think the Kodak Instamatic I got at 14 was ok.

If you mean, with controls, that would be the Ilford Sportina Rapid I was given at 16 yrs old.

My first decent buy was a Pentax ME super.

I had a Praktica LTL3 in the 80s I really wanted an Olympus OM10

Praktica_LTL3_front.jpg

Sold the Cark Zeiss Jena 135mm lens for £80.00 last year which was quite a profit as I paid £30.00 for the camera c/w std 50mm lens and the 135mm.

There seems to be a bit of an Internet craze for the 135mm from Cannon DSLR owners since someone made an adapter. The Practica used the standard 42mm thread mounting.

A Ricoh XR7. Don't think I ever recovered. I really wanted a Nikon/Olympus/Pentax. The Ricoh was a poor, if cheap, choice. Despite being really into cameras as a boy, I never really bothered with cameras after that.

I had a Zenith - B none of that TTL metering stuff
My first 'proper' camera too. Always regretted trading it in a few years later for an Olympus 0M10, nothing wrong with the Olympus which I still have but I'd like to have had the Zenit as a keepsake ...

1971, Zenit B with Helios lens, my first camera.

Snap! I've still got mine sat in the wardrobe, although I haven't used it in years - the shutter-blind sticks and I've never got round to getting it fixed. Built like a T72 and the M44 lens, as some here have discovered, is a beauty. I should try and get an adapter to use it with my 1000d. I learnt (and subsequently forgot  ) so much about exposure and technique using my Zenit that I'm slowly re-learning using digital, but with family commitments, it's difficult to do as much as I once did.

My first camera was a box brownie - I suppose it doesnt count, so an old agfa with controls on the lens, brown leather case, seperate lightmeter. Still got it somewhere, should be in a museum.

Although photography was a hobby I'd wanted to try since the early 90s, in the end I was quite late getting into the 'proper' photography game, I bought a Nikon F75 in 2004 and then picked up a brand new F100 in mid-2006 when they were being sold off as Nikon discontinued most of their film cameras. I then got a D80 in September 2006 and subsequently a Nikon F4 a year or two later, as it was going cheap on eBay and is in mint condition. I eventually sold on the F75 which pretty much covered the cost of the F100. I still have the other 3 cameras.

All are great cameras, the F4 is built like a tank, I reckon I could hammer nails in with it. I have a soft spot for the F75, mine was black and silver, so looked quite unique.

As much as I love digital, it will be a dark day when you can no longer buy or process film
