I agree the music doesn't "come together" as coherent musical works. It's more a stream of consciousness type of thing, just moment by moment creating a beautiful place to be.

I hear that. Maybe I just need more coherence... a la Steinberg's Passion Week.

Although pretty sure I've liked some more stream-of-consciousness type pieces. But anyway, I think this kind of thing is quite mood-dependent for me. Will try again next week...

I'm not usually a fan of stream of consciousness music.
Jazz of that ilk has me rapidly leaving the room feeling ill.
But I just like traditional Armenian music, that works for me.

Au contraire, mon ami! - I'd rate it above the Tchaik or Mendelssohn VC any day.

Played by Rosand or Kogan though (among others, I am sure) and it is a most wonderful piece of music .....

I don't intend this as a willy-waving contest (please pardon my French) but what violinists have you heard play the Khachaturian VC, mb? I am genuinely curious.
This is annoying, I heard Kogan with MRSO here, which was great.

However on CD I can only seem to find his recording with the Boston Symphony. Any idea if it's similar or if it's really the MRSO one to get (and if so if it is on CD?)

I couldn't find Rosand to stream but is this the recording I'm looking for?

I had to dig back to 2007 - that's over 15 years ago! - to find that post.
Wow. Many neurons have died and much hair has been lost since I posted that.

Anyway, yes, that's the Rosand recording I was talking about. I mentioned the conductor being Bakels.

I have not seen the YouTube Moscow performance you linked to before.

I don't know how similar it is to the more famous Boston recording.

Check it out!
Yup, just having a listen.
The Moscow is excellent mono. I shouldn't think it's ever been released on a commercial CD. From the snippet I've heard so far it's a fab performance.
The Boston is excellent stereo.

This is the one I have.

Wow, that's a stunning performance and recording.
What a gorgeous velvety tone Kogan had there.

Really enjoyed that, it's been way too long since I listened to the Khachaturian violin concerto. Why it's not more popular is beyond me..... I suspect the reason is that most violinists aren't very good at it!

Thanks. :)

Listening now to Kogan/Monteux/Boston streamed in stereo.

Well, well, the mono Moscow sound quality is much better imo. The Boston stereo is a bit tame in comparison!

Performance-wise.... there's a wonderful sense of flow in Moscow, more velvet to the sound as well.

It's good to have both, but I'd be happy with only the Moscow on YouTube. :) I've saved it in my YouTube library.

If you click the return arrow on a quote it'll take you to the post being quoted!

Sorry, missed that. I can't find that recording online anywhere so will have to make do with Kogan, which is fine I'm sure.

I had a feeling Moscow would be better - I guess just Ruskies playing Ruskie music. I'll likewise save the piece - it was very good.
