I often find that I enjoy soundtracks for the moods they invoke - relaxing, rousing..

a couple of my favourites are

Breakdown of the Fellowship (Lord of the Rings)

For the love of a princess (Bravehart)

anyone else enjoy this type of thing ?

You've just made me think (t'was a strain) and I've just reach for my 4CD John Barry Collection. Nice background stuff - "put me in a good mood" music.

I quite like the Titanic discs too- must try Gladiator at some point.

Haven't got into the 4CD John Williams film music set yet. Star Wars for anyone?

Must fly...

Much against my inclination, I have to agree that some of these Horner-Shore etc type soundtracks are enjoyable (usually with the film visuals however ...).

There will be a screening of "The Fellowship Of The Ring" in HD at the Royal Albert Hall next April, with the soundtrack music played live by the original orchestra and choirs.

Yes, I think film soundtracks can be fine music. I'm a huge fan of Howard Shore's LOTR music!

And of course it should be remembered that during the dark, repressive days of the mid-20th century when the only new music that was commissioned and played was atonal crap, film music was the only medium where something with a tune was allowed! Many a fine composer who wanted to work tonally was saved from penury by soundtrack composition.
