There have been many posts on this and other Hi-Fi/Music forums about Genesis with and Genesis without Peter Gabriel, we have the albums but there isn't much video of the Gabriel years. A concert was filmed in 1973 at Shepperton Studios on 16mm film it was transfered to video, then DVD and now its been cleaned up to HD by Klerch at Genesis Museum. No doubt some will have seen this for those who haven't here's your chance to see what all the fuss is about.

What we have is a one man theatre show, Peter telling his stories with singing and amateur dramatics , backed by some excellent musicians.

It is so far removed from later Genesis and other rock concerts it almost seems Victorian, how I wish I'd been there, his old man part in The Musical Box is quite sinister, now finally I know what the song was about.

Tracks :-

Watcher of the Skies 0:00

Dancing with the Moonlit Knight 8:36

I Know What I Like 17:40

The Musical Box 24:00

Supper's Ready 37:10

There's been a few short concert sequences (3/4 songs) available on YouTube for a few years now. An entire hour of footage in HD is exceptional though.

Good call Bazza :^

Thanks for this.

Whether Gabriel started using masks & costumes to distract some attention from the poor sound of Genesis'

early PA systems or whether performing behind a mask was his way of dealing on stage with his personal

shyness bogey, it was a smart move & a success.

Wonderful songs & superb musicians.

This band was as good as it gets for me, nothing has ever bettered it. I never liked any of Peter's solo stuff and only have his first album, I continued with the Genesis albums but didn't buy Abacab or beyond.

There is some merit to the theory about the sound systems in the early days. But more likely it was the "art student" mentality of the whole performance. It was carried through their entire career with later emphasis on the light show rather than theatrics. Although Collins is the consumate showman and held the audience.

For the best part, I agree. While I have like ALL Genesis albums, I do prefer the pre-Trio collection. Duke and We Can't Dance are stonkingly good though.

As for Gabriel, I love his first couple of solo albums and like So but it all became too "worthy" and Bono-lite. Less humour and craft. I guess it comes as a result of popularity and focusing on everything other than the music.

Thanks barney, just watched through and loved it. I had a huge Genesis poster on my ceiling as a teen (live stage photo), and listened to them all the time, but never got to see them. Hadn't seen any video of that era - a bit of an eye opener and all the better for it!

Gabriel & Collins hit the 'Big Time' with solo careers & Steve Hackett & Mike Rutherford have had success with

their own bands & solo work but what happened to Tony Banks?

Banks was a highly creative member of Genesis & wrote some great stuff.

I thought his 'A Curious Feeling' album of '79 was a bit disappointing but not heard much else of his.

Wonder.

Yes I agree, I have it on vinyl and have tried to "like" it a few times.

Saw them live in the early 70s and it was a stunning performance. Ignore the whacky costumes and if you like that sort of thing (which I unashamedly do) the music was incredible.

We all have our favourites. I personally prefer the stud with Gabriel and can't abide most of the later albums. However, with the exception of only a few tracks, I really enjoy all Gabriel's solo stuff. Whilst he was (and is) an incredibly good drummer, I simply don't 'so' the Phil Collins stuff. There have been a few blinders to be fair, but most is over-commercialised pop to me.

Anyone know if this (1973) thing is commercially available? I can only find an unpleasantly expensive boxed set, which is a complete waste as I've got the whole lot on vinyl (some at least twice) and CD anyway.

He is an excellent musician and was a great contributor to the overall sound, but that doesn't necessarily make for a great solo artist. Similarly for the rest mostly. I've got all the Hackett and Rutherford stuff, but most I find a pale shadow of the 'real thing'.

Just seen this, and I'm halfway through a "Genesis Day" - I have already played "Foxtrot" "Live" and "Selling England" this morning.

PG was definitely driving something special in these early days. Love the big keyboard themes that Banks keeps coming up with across these albums, this is the real heart of their music for me.

My favourite track is the live keyboard medley on "In The Cage" on "Three Sides Live"- will be blasting that one out before wifey gets in from work later.

Listen out, you might hear it from where you are....... :)

Very true, his Bankstatement album is a 80s cheese based case in point. Some of his more classical based albums are more tollerable. Actually Seven: A Suite for Orchestra is quite good.

I am very impressed with the Hackett solo albums (Genesis Revisited I/II exempted), less so by Mike & The Mechanics.

Hackett's 'Momentum' is a superb album of classical guitar playing & is well worth tracking down.

My vinyl copy is regularly played.

When I came across this video the first thing I thought was, I want to buy it but it doesn't seem to be available, that is when I realised most people haven't seen it and started the thread.

The best thing would be to contact http://www.genesismuseum.com/, the link opens on the page about the HD mastering.

Ta Barry.

I've never seen it commercially and the box set on Amazon I suspect isn't the same recording anyway. I think the only commercially available live set from around that time is the one done at the Rainbow. It was a great concert (I know, because I was there), but a lousy video.

Seeing as computers and programing are my work I should know, but I don't have any dealing with streaming and media stuff at all.

Is there any way to 'grab' the YT feed and save it?

I have a DVD of that concert purchased several years ago, looks and sound quality would lead me to believe it could be a pirate copy as it's crap to say the least,do not bother with this until better copies are available as it's a waste of money.

Also when I saw the concert in Jan 73 "I know what I like" was not included on the play list and several others were omitted, see the 73 live LP for the earlier concerts that year track listing.
