I’ll introduce myself properly in another thread but thought I’d kick things off by sharing some pictures and initial thoughts of my new turntable.
Was going to go the Rega route and was contemplating anything from the P1 to the P6 (and to be honest I may even have gone mad and at least tried the P8!).
Decided to peruse eBay just in case something caught my eye there and stumbled upon an ARB turntable and arm combo. I know there’s a handful of people in this fine shire who have some of Andy’s work and I thought I’d give it a go. Love true ‘garden shed’ British engineering. He machines pretty much the whole thing himself and the arm is his own design he’s been honing over the last 12 years.
Arrived the other day and finally got it set up. Beautifully made thing. Very impressed with the machining and the arm in particular is an intriguing and well thought out design. Dual pivot design and very smooth. Dual counterweights - a main one and then a threaded one for fine tuning.
Carbon tube and brass / steel elsewhere. The photos should show how it functions and it looks like quite a different design to many manufacturer arms out there the VTA adjustment in particular is genius - just an o-ring on the shaft that goes into the arm mount. So simple yet so functional
The main chassis is 10mm aluminium and the sub chassis solid oak. Very well isolated and again very well thought out DC motor with homemade regulator box complete with fine speed adjust.
Have listened to it just through the line stage on my headphone amp (cans listening only at my place currently but HE1000’s through a Trilogy 931 amp so very capable ) and there’s definitely promise there. Have a very cheap phono stage (£12!) coming today and will try a few proper ones out in time.
Was a bit of a punt going this route but I’m growing in confidence that I’ve made a solid choice. https://www.hifiwigwam.com/xenforo/...C1.jpeg.ef602e6acd152cefda069bd587de8b82.jpeg
