I've just gone through this interesting read called "'Dynamic Range' & The Loudness War"

Have you heard Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californification? The normal version, sounds awful. It is not to my taste but the uncompressed version sounds so much better.

Listening to digital files via a streamer makes it very noticeable. Overall I have listened at much lower volume than usual. Digital music can be much better than I thought previously and it is all down to how music was recorded and reproduced.
