Does anybody know what type of paint and laquer I should use to respray the cabinets of my NS1000's to a quality Piano Black finish?

Also, would I need to use an undercoat? Obviously I'd sand off the existing red finish, but would I then need to prime the wood or anything?

I guess also it would be best to remove the drivers and crossover before painting, any tips on how to do this? (I'm a complete amateur without a soldering iron - so if anybody wants to lend a hand for a few free pints, that would be awesome!)

Not an easy job Russell and don't expect a top class finish on the cheap with a couple of cans of woolies spray paint.

Yes they will need taking back to bare wood with a suoer smooth finish otherwise it will show through into the laquer layers as sure as night follows day.

If it was me I would send them to a cabinet maker and I would expect to be without them for a few weeks at least as each coat has to be fully dry and needs rubbing down again before the next coat goes on. Has to be a spray gun too as tins of spray paint are no good on anything bigger than a fag packet.

Might cost you as much as you paid for the speakers

I'd put money on it being car-body 2-pack, in which case a visit to your local body-shop could be rewarding - they can smack on keying compound and primer that'll stop any colour bleed. As Frank says - it'll no be cheep, but a coupleof hundred should do it. ForgetDIY sparay paint tinsunless you want your speakers to resemble Jade Goody's thighs, texturally speaking...

Well worth talking to a local car/bike spraying or customizing specialist. You could probably get a great effect by spraying black directly on top of the red - it would look black most of the time but change colour in sunlight. Can be made more or less subtle by varying the number of coats of black.

My mate had a Harley petrol tank done like this and it really looked the biz. :dude:

Edit: I think this effect is called "Candy Black".

I was considering getting them veneered at a cabinet maker, but thought I might be able to do a decent paint job at home - obviously not!

I know a luthier who might be able to give me some advice - I'll have to give him a ring.

I like the Red colour - but it got chipped in places in transport - so I'm thinking of a respray. The Red ones also had all new drivers - which should save me having to replace them any time soon.

Fair point re the drivers!

Chipped in transport?! Nightmare:shock:

Did you collect or were they shipped to you?

I've had my Harbeth C7s for years and LOVE them, they work for me.

BUT, I must confess to having an irrational lust for a pair of Harbeth Monitor 40s and anything from NS-1000/M/X/2000/10000 family. One day...

You gonna do that deal with that guy about that thing?! You know you wanna...

If its car paint (likely), you could try one of the mobile vehicle paint repair companies like Chipsaway (or equivalent)? If the damage isn't too severe, they might well be able to do an invisible repair. Might cost a few quid but repair would be done at your place and would be quick, probably with little or no dismantling. Just a thought

I've been a bit too busy to ring around the insurers today fella

rest assured that I'm quite interested - will just have to talk it through with relevant parties (we've actually got a Mk 3 Golf on the drive at the minute anyway).

The NX-1000M's are very very special, and I can forsee me holding onto them for a while (or until the next thing comes along that tickles my fancy).

Just rang my luthier friend, and he recommended somebody nearby who is going to look at them next Monday. Would be nice to have them well veneered

This is one instance where some care should be taken in spelling. Cambridge scholar too.

what did you think repraying meant?

Scientists aren't required to spell btw, plus I'm currently neither at Oxford or Cambridge after giving up on Chemistry

Don't fret Biccy - even if medicine doesn't work out, you'll do fine - I have no higher qualifications of any kind -completely self taught, but I hold an academic post in a reasonably competent institute of higher education, and before that similar in a fairlybig museum in London...
