Contemplating getting an amp with dual speaker outputs so that I can have a choice of running my Dyns Focus for big musical/HT occasions and my Neutron IVs for delicate late-nite sessions. They would be placed on stands next to each other, tho.

Never done this before and I wonder if their proximity to each other will affect the other's performance.

That's encouraging Dave. btw, I take it that the baffle-lines of your B&Ws were placed level with each other? (i.e. no one pair is positioned ahead of the other, closer to you?)

Having them side by side will alter the way sound radiates from the speaker and so will affect the sound. If you can keep it sounding good at your listening position I don't see why you shouldn't attempt it though.

Daft idea. Two speakers side by side create a sonic vortex. The end result of which is thatit attracts the presence of Satan. You have been warned.

On the other hand, an Amp with dual speakers output (and a switch) will not be Hifi quality. Unless you intend to connect and disconnect speakers all the time.

Cheers.

Is has been done before but only in specialised systems...like Romy the Cat's for example.

It can and is done, but it must be tailored especially...otherwise it would sound weird!

This resonance thing just reminded me of something else:bulb: For nearly a decade I've had to use my speakers flanking a tall object in the middle. It used to be a writing bureau, now it's a telly and its cabinet. Is there any truth in what some hifi scribes say: that there ideally shouldn't be any thing within the plane of one's speakers - that they can "see" each other, if they glanced sideways? IIRC one of these proponents is Jimmy Hughes in HFC.

I see lots of wammer systems that have the hifi rack in the centre, as do mine. Ideal?

i'm not sure if this old (as in now thought otherwise) wisdom, but any resonating cabinets (and old, thin plastic walled CRT telly cabinets were appaerently very bad) are dodgy in the room, but if you must, between and slightly behind is better than in line of fire apparently. CRT's were adversly affected by big nagnetic fields too, so speakers near tellies were off limits for those reasons too, but I dont think this can be true of plasma / lcd jobbies else the home cinema boys would always need shielded fronts:?

Shropshire Borders,
Use the second pair as rear speakers in a Hafler Network..

That way you'll have a proper Tunnel Of Sound - in other words real surround sound as opposed to dodgy 5,1 mixes.

Wire them amp Left + to speaker 1 +, then speaker 1 - to speaker 2 +, then speaker 2 - to amp Right +.

A highly recommended upgrade for everybody!
