I used to use a squeezebox touch, I have music on upstairs Mac mini.

I have an iPad and have used a BT receiver SMSL B1 to direct music/ radio/ bbc sounds to HiFi.

having read the limitations of BT vs WiFi, is there a modern day equivalent for reasonable money for the SBT?

what does the hive mind suggest?

Firstly there are second hand SBT which will work just as your previous item did . Secondly there are SBT Clones which are made up of Raspberry Pi units plus either a DAC Hat or a Digihat and a Pi Touch Screen .

Alternatives are Bluesound Node which is a single unit .

Lots depend on the budget and also your willingness to learn and set up things which is needed with the Pi options .

@soupdragon

I have just spent time this morning, helping someone on another forum with a Mac-mini preoblem and installing BBC Sounds Plugin on LMS.

Not insurmountable, but a decided faff.

Which OS is on the Mac ?

Is LMS on the Mac ?

Is the Mac on all the time ?

Do you still have the SBTouch ?

I would say, raspberry pi with piCorePlayer OS running LMS with either a dac or spdif HAT for outlet into your hifi

Music files on the Mac can be accessed, via the network, from the raspberry pi when the Mac is powered on.

There is a BBC Sounds plugin which pretty well replicates the official BBC Sounds App and requires you to use your BBC Account to sign in.

Plus lots of other good stuff

Control from the iPad can be with iPeng, Material Skin browser or SqueezePad. I use either of the last two.

Lots of help available

There is an SBT just come up for sale on the classifieds . No provided you have  LMS running on another computer which I presume you did with the other SBT you used just make sure you have it upgraded to the latest software . If you use Hi Res then I would advise the Digital Output Plug in from Triode .

What Ronnie says above is also ideal except you have no touch screen and you control is either via you laptop or a tablet or smart phone .

My preference and not because it is free is to use Material Skin which is a plugin on LMS . This works using the IP address of your LMS and the :9000 on the end . It will work on any device that can access the internet . I like its layout and once i found out how to get at all the player and server settings via the drop downs it just works .

I recommend installing the version from MySqueezebox.com to begin with. update the lms later to either v 8.1.2 or 8.2.0

Catalina will likely decline to install the file, just choose to do so.

LMS no longer starts from "boot up" on mac os but does from "log in"

The problem I referred to is over here

https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?113045-Announce-BBC-Sounds-Plugin&p=1028821&viewfull=1#post1028821

It should be sorted later today  9_9  the dev posted after we had arrived at a resolution  :)

ronnie

I'm actually just moving down from Catalina to Mojave  o_O

Morning

put LMS 8.2 on the Mac, updated the SBT to 7.8, activated material etc

but can’t seem to work out using iPad to control SBT, I’ve tried putting http lms ip :/material into the google and safari browser on the iPad and got nothing. What else do I have to do? Short of forking out for iPeng for the iPad, is there anything I’m missing setting up the iPad do do the ‘material’ thing?

Usage

  1. Access the skin through http://<yourserver>:9000/material/
  2. Select "Add to Home screen" on your device, if supported.

https://github.com/CDrummond/lms-material/wiki/Detailed-Information#selecting-mobile-or-desktop

Selecting mobile or desktop

Material should automatically choose mobile or desktop layouts, but you may also force one or the other.

  • http://<yourserver>:9000/material/?layout=mobile will force mobile layout
  • http://<yourserver>:9000/material/?layout=desktop will force desktop layout

You can also launch Material straight into its desktop now-playing screen, using:

In case I was not clear you will need your full LMS URL which should be something like 192.168.1.XXX with XXX being the three numbers allocated to LMS by your network .

In LMS you need to install the Material Skin plug in which is under plugins in settings . Once this has been done and you can see it in your plugins you then still in settings there is a tab for display which drops down a menu choose Material Skin and the refresh the page and the Material skin GUI will start .

In order to open this page type your top line browser bar were you would normally type www. etc the following

192.168.1.xxx:9000

This should open in to the Material Skin page and you can save this as a short cut so you can access it easily .

Once in Material Skin you should see any players connected to LMS in the top left corner again this is drop down if you have more than one player connected and just choose Squeezebox Touch and then you control from there .

If you need to add plugins or set up the player the way you want to then the three dots in the top right give a drop down menu of Settings and Information and click on the settings and it allows Server and Player adjustments.
