Still not a great pic - http://www.vinylengine.com/library_model.php?make=Alphason%20Designs&selected_model=Sonata

Griffo,

Cheers for the pics. Those are better than anything I could find!

However, the Sonata I'm looking at is evennicer than the ones in those pics - its absolutely immaculate, and in the rosewood finish it looks gorgeous. I wish I could find a review on it somewhere, just so I can get a handle on how it sounds before I go to the bother of auditioning it. If you can find a review, you'll get a special prize

Hi Marco,

I use an SP10 Mk2 in a Stirling Broadcast Plinth with an Audio Note wired SMEV and an Audio Note Io cartridge. The cartridge is loaded by AN-S6 (Japan) silver transformers.

I took this TT to the recent cornish bakeoff. Have a look at the thread. The chaps there quite liked it.

I've heard a couple of EMT's but am no expert on them. There is one model which is supposed to be THE model to buy but I can't remember the number. A pal in Germany will remind me.

Murray

*THAT* is one awesome looking turntable

I bet it sounds amazing. I like the arm and cartridge combination, too, it must really kick some ass bass-wise, 'cos I know the SME V and Audio Note aren't exactly 'shy' in that department either. I don't know your taste in music, but I can just imagine, for example, how some 12" dance singles must sound!

What's the rest of your system, and if you don't mind me asking, how much did the SP10 cost on its own, and how much did it cost to put it into the plinth? Or did you buy it as it is?

I suppose I should actually do some proper work now.

It does seem a to be a popular deck with the people who own it, may be a potential problem with spare parts if anything does go wrong, but then you may find you can use bits of modern decks.

Nice deck - it's a shame companies like Sony (and Trio and a few others) never got their serious top-end decks over here - maybe the LP12 stranglehold meant it wasn't worth the effort.

That looks like a serious piece of kit - I was impressed by the Trio/Kenwood reviewed in Hifi World last year (vs a Michell Gyrodec).

Sadly most of us young vinylphiles (?) simply rmemeber very cheap and nasty Japanese turntables on those horrible 80's midi systems :puke:

Or did the likes of Sony give up on vinyl when they wanted to get a cd player in everyones house ?

Mibby baby,

The Sony review is imminent, but it won't be today, as its way too sunny and nice outside and the Marco boy will be soaking up the rays

Then it's off to the pub later, so expect the review sometime over the weekend, or on Monday.

Bloody damn fine CDP it is, though!!

Here's a pic of the Sonata I'm looking at, although it looks even better in the flesh (incidentally, the CDP underneath sounded tasty during the demo with the Sony!):

Hi Marco,

A little more (in focus)SP10 Porn.

pre-ampinsidechinesTT018.jpg

Doug Stirling (Stirling Broadcast) sells a lot of ex studio stuff including (for a while) SP10's. I bought this one as a re-con unit from him. He also makes the plinths from Corian with 2 stages of decoupling in them. Works very well. He supplied the deck fitted to the plinth with SME cut out for about £700. Funnily enough on the same day I bought it I accidentally won another SP10 on eBay.(£150) A bit tatty but works ok. I want to have a go at making a substantial sprung plinth for that when I have some time.

The Alphason looks tasty as does the Sony. We need to have a vintage turntable shoot-out!

I never liked vdH cable and ordered my arm wired with the AudioNote stuff. I think the HR100S would also benefit from being wired with something else. Well worth doing though, its a nice arm.

rgds,

Murray
