Think about it all the time... sod the stereo and just get on with the music, eg. squeebox into cheapo DAC into cheapo DIY valve amp and speakers. But then eventually one of 2 things happen:

a) I log on to the forum

b) I think, hey why not have both?

So I doubt I'll ever downgrade from my current set-up. Enjoying too much of it!

Late nightlistening. Stop that and you can downgrade to anything. But good kit even at low levels can give you the collywobbles.

Flogging your expensive kit and getting something rather more basic, mebbe the current Rotel or Marantz low priced stuff, and promising yourself no more upgrades?
Craig - I've been doing this for a while and have currently spent a lot less than last years setup with pre/powers etc.

Problem is that curiosity gets the better of you and if the money is available I find I have to just try outthe next level up

- I'm my own worst enemy.

I envy my bro sometimes - he's got an Arcam 72 CD player, 85 amp and some B&W 601's - system rocks and he is quite content.

What i enjoy these days is digging up 2nd hand bargains - stuff that cost thousands years ago and is now worth a few hundred pounds ;)because I dont think amp technology has changed at all and if anything, stuff was better built years ago. As for CD players, my current thoughts are that the DAC is the most important bit with the transport having less of an influence (dont shoot me

- its only a theory but the squeezebox is my proof).

If I can convince myself to go full size boxes again then I can probably see myself building a sweet little system for under £700.

I've asked you before, if you had the A3.2 CD player these days would you still think the minimax is better considering the A3.2 can be had for sub £300

Youve hit some nails on heads there old chum!As for the last question, if id picked up an A3.2 for that price, possibly not!

I've had a gutfull of inefficient speakers that require massive power amps etc. Even pre/powers seem over complex these days. However I still love vinyl so I've bult a simple system around the TT and run the laptop through airport express.

Happier than ever and have no desire to upgrade.

Nah - IME the Minimax CDP does the "palpable presence" thing pretty well - musicians in the room. The MF 3 series doesn't do that so well. I know which I'd go with.
