Dac/preamp with XLR out and RCA in ... what are my options?

Many of these devices convert analogue inputs to digital.  The Benchmark does not do this but it's not clear if the Project does.  Naim do this with their Novas and t/t does not sound great.

Another option I forgot is the Rotel RC-1572 -  it has a phono stage as well as a decent selection of analog and digital inputs including Bluetooth.

DomT makes an excellent point. There are DAC/preamps that offer the option of either remaining in analogue or AD conversion into the digital domain for DSP/ room compensation. Eg Anthem, but comes at a price. Based on my experience with the NT 505, I have high expectations of this soon to released TEAC. RCA/XLR in/out Analogue preamp and is definitely not a "box of air". Expected rrp of @ £2K.

I know you tried bel canto one box but a pre 3 vbs is rather good with actives. Occassionaly come up at around 750 inc psu.
