Just in the planning stages for some a horn project and the budget is leaving me around 250 quid for midrange comprssion drivers when everything else is taken into account. Clearly this leaves the likes of BMS completely out of the window for the time being. Is this doable, even second hand?

Suggestions of what to look out for?

what frequency do you need to cover? off the top of my head, you can get some nice jbls for 500 quid which i know is abit off budget...

Thanks guys. That reassures me a bit as it was lloking like i'd only get halfway through the project before running out of dosh.

the phenolic/alnico driver looks good though you'd need to have a series resistor (like in LeCleach triode festival) to boost the dip in 1kHz, and smoothen the rising frequency response...

i remember going to the lansing heritage and jblpro website to pour over all the schematics/specifications when i started this process...

As I say i'm just in the planning stages at the moment and waiting for a few bits and bobs to sell before i start buying anything. I reckon it's gonna be a long slow process and i'm sure you people with much more knowledge and experience in these matters will get thoroughly sick of my questions in time.

I think the diaphragms are pretty shit. I would avoid. The ones I've seen look like they're made of tupperware off-cuts.

Right, numpty question alert. :p Well several akcherly

1. If I went for a pair of 280hz horns (rather than 400hz xed at 800hz) crossed over at 500hz how far into the high freqs could i take them with JBL 2482 and would it be sufficient to use just a tweeter to accomodate the high frqs?

2. Can I get a single bass cab to get me to 500hz without needing another drive/cab???? or am i being a tad optimistic?

The reason I ask is that PERHAPS (unless its completely stoopid, which i think it may be:p) i'd like to add another horn at a later date to cover from 1800hz ( a 605hz horn) up and so would like to keep the stuff i buy as flexible as poss to allow this. Feel free to make mock, point and laugh etc... :^

Spec says nominal efficiency 25% 500Hz - 2.5Khz, Frequency range 300Hz - 6Khz. 500Hz - 2.5Khz gives you 2.5 octaves so you will need something above that really. Don't listen to me though I don't know as much as the learned ones.

The 2482 will be good for 6kHz give or take, so you'll definitely need something above that. You *should* be able to get some sort of bass cab to go up to 500Hz. A nice OB could be good here.
