P3 (almost new for your budget) fitted with a Denon DL110. For the money I'd say it would take a lot of beating. Simple, reliable, stays in tune and you can sell it on for little or no losswhether you decide to upgrade or get rid of vinyl.

The DL110 will live in a much more esoteric record player too - it's disgustingly good VFM.

For a little more (450 quid) theres a gorgeous Maple Rega P25 in the classifieds section, complete with Super Elys cart too. A top deck for the money.

Definitely in the 'how the f*ck can something this good be so cheap?' category.

On classical/orchestral the Denon soundsespecially great...in fact no, it sounds amazing. Reckon the 110's the best 300 quid cartridge I've ever bought....for less than 70 quid.

Biggest surprise is the lack of surface noise - it's justso quiet.

lol, i know.... seems the more hours on them, the better they sound too!

Denon have started to reissue the DL301 , that looks well worth a punt!

The original was supposed to be a stormer, the price is around £160 (again prices haven`t changed since the late 70`s, early 80`s!)

For that budget you're just on the cusp of moving up to the next level. Increase it and go for a £450 Funk Firm Funk TT. They aren't supplied with a cart but you may find one ex-demo with one fitted.

I would be wary of buying a second hand TT and used cart unless its from a reputable dealer who can offer a 3 or 6 month guarantee.
