Just scored one of these vintage beauty’s in nice condition. Should make a good candidate for a recap and tart-up!

Seems the SMPS should be the first job, replacing the low temp caps with higher temp modern ones and also installing some new binding posts…… we’ll see where we go from there but she’s a bit of a looker….

Secretly we all love an amp with meters, Andrew, you're not alone!

Love the gunmetal finish, and I'm also a big fan of the switches used for the filters / tape loop - they usually have that silky-smooth damped feel as you change the settings, lovely!

It is definitely a product of its time though - ergonomically a little random! And there are so many other types of control - did Sony have lots of different bits to use up in the parts bin? (I'm not having a dig, just a bit of leg-pulling)

It will be interesting to know how it performs once you've done the refurb work - vintage Japanese stuff seems to go on forever and has a satisfyingly grunty and purposeful sound. Keep us posted!

Pulse locked power supply(PLPS), similar in aim to Chord switch mode power supply(SMPS - common to all their amps), Large power output from a light power amplifier. Linn also do a SMPS in some of their amps.(Chakra)

Iirc the 2 tweeters thing was a vat loophole at the time.
