The thing that scares me is that any change *does* make a difference. You might not be able to hear it but put a brace of kippers somewhere near the speakers and some of the high frequencies will inevitably be attenuated by the smoked flesh (low frequencies are too long a wavelength to be affected by kippers - they would need something like a Tuna or Marlin.)

Not sure what difference the smoking of the fish makes on HF attenuation, though plain Haddock would go a bit ripe after a few days.... I suspect the smoking makes the kippers last much longer and is worth it for that reason alone.
