Where do I buy a stylus for my Shure M75EJ Type 2?

I've spent ages thinking about upgrading to something better but realised that I can't really afford anything great and honestly, I really like the sound of the Shure. Can anyone recommend a good source for a good stylus? Can't afford SaS, think I've probably got a N75-6 stylus judging by beige colour, looking at  something like an HE..

Jico pops up on just about every search and there look to be a few variants on the Japanese site - https://www.jico-stylus.com  - these appear to be a pretty reliable needle. I'd prefer to buy from somewhere in the UK but can only really find eBay auctions which suggest Jico pedigree rather than coming in the distinctive Jico packaging etc.

Any pointers for a reliable sellers??

Cheers

Yeah - loads on eBay at various prices but it's a complete lottery as far as I can tell. Anything claiming originality is waaaay more than £18 so quite a gamble.

I would recommend you get a new cartridge - if you can stretch your funds an Ortofon Red would set you back about £95.  The problem with the Shure is that you cannot get original styli anymore and the ones for sale are OEM ones and the quality I believe cannot be assured.

If that is too much for £45 you can get a decent audio technica cartridge https://premiumsound.co.uk/product/turntables-accessories/phono-cartridges/audio-technica-at-vm95e-dual-moving-magnet-cartridge/?adTribesID=22a27fce1fa82719e4d5dfae65ca69cd|adtribes|10755&utm_source=Google Shopping&utm_campaign=Premium Sound&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=10755&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1P_4vsmd3gIVy7TtCh22tQg0EAQYAiABEgIJEPD_BwE

this replaced the AT95E which is still available - £34 from Amazon  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-At95e-Phonograph-Cartridge/dp/B004NRVUMI/ref=sr_1_1/261-1172807-3039513?ie=UTF8&qid=1540332645&sr=8-1&keywords=audio-technica+at95e

You pays your money and make your choice but if it was me I would be more trusting of a new top manufacturer cartridge than an OEM replacement stylus for what was a pretty average 40+ year old cartridge.

I was going to add that for about £100 you might still be able to get a brand new Shure M97xe, although as you may have read Shure have stopped making all Hi-Fi cartridges now.  The Ortofon Red is okay if you like a fairly warm sound, but I think it’s a bit pricey now. Otherwise I’d definitely second almost anything from the AT range, as linked by uzzy above, which are more neutral towards bright ime.

Thanks for the feedback. I have thought about a new cart but the trouble is, I've listened to quite a range of carts, some pretty expensive, and always find I prefer the M75.

Might be worth trying this combo. They offer a 14 day returns.

The 75/6 is a different animal in sound to the 75ED to my ears - it is an inferior stylus tracking at higher weights.   You really need to get your ears around a few before you make a decision.  I had a 75ED some 40 odd years ago and just about every cartridge I bought after sounded better and in the shop the cheap Grados and others were all better sounding.

It was only a suggestion. The OP's exact model is becoming as rare as hens teeth.

Fair comment but the chances of santa bringing me a nice new cart are pretty slim

wot is £35 a bridge too far to get an AT95 E which is still available? - £34 from Amazon  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-At95e-Phonograph-Cartridge/dp/B004NRVUMI/ref=sr_1_1/261-1172807-3039513?ie=UTF8&qid=1540332645&sr=8-1&keywords=audio-technica+at95e  At least your records will be protected until you can raise the pennies for an exotic jobby

Don't really see that as an option though. I've tried enough, hence the original question about sourcing a stylus. Do appreciate your input.

You got me banged to rights there Mr Penguin, can't say that I have. Entirely possible that there's a budget gem of a cart out there but the route to finding one feels difficult and potentially costly.

Have you heard any Audio Technica cartidges?

Well I stand by my comments - you will not find a genuine Shure stylus - only OEM ones and there is no guarantee of quality.

Reviews can be found of the AT95 here https://www.needledoctor.com/Audio-Technica-95E-Cartridge  and here https://www.analogplanet.com/content/nine-cartridges-compared-reviewed-and-voting-results  and here http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/a-review-of-the-audio-technica-at95e-cartridge-longish.293922/ and here http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/cartridge-2m-red-vs-audio-technica-at95e.262616/ and here https://www.tnt-audio.com/sorgenti/linn_basik_e.html and in loads of places on google.

But at the end of the day ya pays ya money and makes ya choice.  To keep your records pristine until you can afford a more exotic choice I know what I would do :)

I'll certainly give it some thought. Thanks everyone for all the comments.

If the desired stylus or cartridge is hard to source then the natural progression is to look at ones that are readily available, such as the AT.

What's the maximum budget? Not being nosey but if we have an idea we could better point you in the right direction.
