Now that im officially a long term toobie I need to aquire a multi meter. Probably wont use it for much else, but never say never and all that.

Not knowing a good one from a bad one can someone point me in the direction of a good basic but accurate option and or an idea on how much ill need to spend.

Thanks

Hawk

Amen to the Maplins one. I have an even cheaper one than that from Maplins and still manage to build & test amps with it. Having said that, mine only measures to 600v which ain't much use when you're working with 845's etc!

yeah.

I've got a long-term project with repairing some 211 monoblocks. HT is 1166v

what meters would you recommend for that sort of voltage? most meters I've seen do 1000v and that's it...

We use Fluke at work. They are built to last and the range is quite broad. You'd never need to buy another one. The point of going that route is that Test equipment must be reliable.

How often do you need to use it? I have no idea about tubes TBH.

in my last proper techy job I wanted to geta fluke, but the arsehole who was the 'operational director' wouldn't let me. he insisted on something else. even though I'd used fluke before. he said that people would think we were amateurs if we went into motorola with fluke stuff.

can't remember what we bought in the end. mototola shut down a few months later and I got made redundant when the arseholes decided that despite insisting on me agreeing to at least 2 years committment when I accepted the position, they couldn't afford me the same courtesy, unless I moved down to worcester.

anyway. rant over

I mainly use a cheap £20 maplin jobbie at the momemt. does enough for the low-voltage valve stuff.

300bs shouldn't need meters of more than 600v anyway.

£9.99 from Maplins but make sure you get one which has leads you plug in connected leads can not be replaced if damaged

its so easy to put hot soldering iron on them

As for how often every couple of months and after valve change

but of course when you first get multi meter its after every track

I want a fluke so badly as it is I'm using some badly rigged up thing that plugs into my scope and I just have to read the voltage off the screen, not ideal.

I might buy a decent one next week as some of the voltages I'm working with now have to be measure pretty accurately.
