I have a taste of most musical genres in my collection but I have no funk at all. Just bought a best of collection of The Meters and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I therefore need some recommendations for other stuff, especially James Brown - I just got confused when looking at amazon, way too many albums out there. A collection would be a good starting place but any essential albums please let me know.

Any recommendations of other artists would also be welcome.

Not sure if these classify as funk Griffo. But if you don’t have any stuff from them I would try them out :

Gil Scott Heron (Funk with a policitised message)

Stevie Wonder (70-77 – Innervisions, Music of the Mind, Talking Book a very rich period of his music)

Donald Byrd.

George Clinton

Cheers guys.

I've already got Headhunters - any jazz fan HAS to have this.

and I got Freaky Styley in the Virgin sale on Monday

.

However, I'm going after the Stevie Wonder (thanks CJ), and a couple of Leonard's recommendations (defo James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone and some Bootsy).

I suppose Goerge Clinton is pretty essential ? I remember seeing him on that soul doco on Beeb 2 last year.

Griff, I am currently listening to this just now and it sounds like its rigth up your street, a classic jazz-funk vocalist is Terry Callier, this is some of his tunes remixed very very nicely. Stunning.

Right if you have never heard any Gil Scott-Heron I would recommend a 2CD collection called “Gloryâ€, has a wonderful mix of tunes, from Johannesburg, Shut-em Down, Bottle, Revolutiion etc etc, a masterpiece. :

Modern funk well you are going to have to get Prince’s Sign of the Times dude !!

Funk eludes my music collection too. I own none of the above titles.

Question: that song "Funky Town", does it belong to the funk or to the disco genre?

CJ,

Got lots of Terry Callier - never thought he was in that genre. I have one of his first records which is just him and a guitar and the cover states 'the new Folk Sounds' or something like that.

A friend of mine is well into Gil Scott Heron so I'm going try and swipe a couple of albums off him.

Konig - thanks for JB recommendations.

I think I'm up to about 10 albums now.

both have that infectious heavy basline that you cant help nodding your head to.. But disco tends to have a string-heavy arrangement, and more "poppy" vocals

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk Good definition! Lenny Henry's TV prog. "History of the Funk" is also well worthwhile..
Must also recommend "Zapp", and not only because Roger Troutman shot his brother Larry while recording!

And of course, no discussion on funk is complete without mentioning the "GoGo" movement in Washington DC, the pinnacle of which was:

And of course, Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers' "Bustin' Loose":

Funnily enough the best James Browns songs I have ever heard – 2 of them appear on the OST to Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels.

The Payback & The Boss anyone know which JB albums these tracks appeared on ?

Sort of, but not The Funk...

Too sampled, no looseness, too dancey if you know warrimean...

But OK in a "We've listened a lot to A Certain Ratio" kind of way:
