As I have about 1000 CDs, I’ve just bought 2 of these for filing and storing them. I am in the process of transferring them from the jewel cases to the floppy drop files. They are currently in purpose made CD draws, but are begining to take up too much room.

Having finished the first case, I have just thought that when I am finished, what happens when I buy a new CD. I have been buying a lot of CDs lately and am beginning to think this might have been a bad idea?.

My ideal/favourite means of storing CDs was on some customised Billy Bookcases from Ikea. Unfortunately it took up too much wall space and if allowed to continue would have taken over the house eventually. Has anyone else with a large quantity of CDs bought these, and have they had similar storage and access problems. Please advise.

I am in the process of deciding what digital format to code these to hard drive then I'll go the squeezebox way I think.

Nope the drop file pockets are just the same as the soft plastic sleeves many people use for back-up copies;). They have an inners soft cloth type material. separating the 2 cds per pocket.

I found when opening jewel cases, especially doubles, if the centre spine was been broken, the CDs drop out:grrr:so could not be any worse IMO.

Another question, When I am finished, do I then have to re index everything in order to find them?

I would replace any jewel cases that were damaged and I'd open them in such a way as to prevent droppages.

As for sliding my pristine cds into sleeves I just couldn't do it. A filing system has yet to be devised that I'd be happy with. Besides, I like my jewel cases. If you're going to store cds like that you may as well rip them to hard disk and play 'em off there. Go the whole hog man!

I used to use a B&Q tool case (very similar to the look of the maplin one) with some of the internal bits removed, it had 2 dividing panels, and held 3 rows of cd's in their jewel cases, and was only £15 ish

I appreciate these were twice the price i.e. £29 each instead of the normal £50, but they already have the purpose made drop file type CD pockets. If I kept the CDs in the jewel cases I would need about 12 Cases to hold 1000 CDs whereas I only need 2 Cases for the same amount of CDs, thus proving my point of how much actual space Jewel cases actually take up.

I must admit the CDs in the Jewel cases look better on shelves, but the way they were growing exponentially something had to give. It wasn't like this in the "good old days", when 12" Vinyl LPs was all you had to consider.

Fair enough, but once again I would probably need about 12 boxes at least. Then there is the problem of stacking, Zappa is likely to be in the bottom box.:roll:and I would have to shift 11 boxes to get to his CDs. Or I would have to make/buy shelving and I havent got the room.

Have just filed both cases up to Yes and ran out of space. Will have to get another case to file the rest of Ys, Zs, and all the compilation and Classical stuff which I file separately. And any new ones I buy.

:wall:Looks like I miscalculated, D**n, F**k,S:td:e,B******s.

Received email from Sony today, do you think they are trying to tell me something?. I like the way it moves and sort all you Lps, Cds, Tapes into one neat little box, without any leads, record player etc. Damned clever people those Japanese! Thats where I've been going wrong. Should have had one of them Cube Box storage systems, and a gigajuke to sort them all out forme.

Crikey, that one fell out of the ugly tree, and no doubt.

fell out of the ugly tree and hit the branches of the B&W speaker tree next to it on the way down judging by the tweeter faceplates.

Have been trawling the local hifi dealers for Audio Hard Drive players, then thought if I go down this route to access my music, what am I going to do with my SACD, and MF 3.5 CDP,I've just bought:doh:?.

Methinks I'll just have to sort out the Shelving & Storage problem.

That SONY piece of kit is pretty good I reckon. Not hifi obviously and when I clicked on the link I was expecting some poxy small hard drive but 80gig is enough for most people. The future of hifi for the masses me thinks.

I couldnt agree more. The impression I got was that for people with a big collection, and I fall into that category, this is definitely the way forward. (Providing you have not already spent a lot of money on a CD player, which I have)

As space in anyone's house becomes a premium, the downloading of lots of albums onto one unit seems to be the way forward IMO. The ones I looked at today were as follows, and had I not spent lots on a CDP I would have seriously considered one of the below. Bloody Hindsight again.

I'm about to move house (to a flat actually) and looking at my crates of cds is scaring the hell out of me. Where are they all going to go?:nerves:When you think that all of them, every single last one, could be bunged onto a digital device no bigger than a cd player it does start to make sense. What would I do with my cds then though?
ponder-1.gif
They cost me a fair bit and I'm quite sentimentally attached to them.
sad.png
I could box them up and deliver them to my mum's loft but then they'd get that 'loft smell'and never be the same again. Or I could sell them on eBay for a lot less than I paid originally.
1146.gif
Then my hard drive will break and I'll have to buy them all again.
f_doh.gif.2bfa1ec008d0c8800eee305d3a30be23.gif

I don't know. Part of me is thinking to sell all my kit and go down this spacesaving route but the cds themselves are the problem. What to do...
