New Camera for the Mrs - Panasonic Lumix LX7

The Mrs wants a new compact camera, and has her eye on a Panasonic Lumix LX7 :roll:

Is there anything else to consider at the current price point?

I think she is jealous of my Sony DSC-HX50 but likes the shots I take with my Canon 400D :clout:

Nothing to special or fancy, just a good all rounder would suffice!

Looks like a nice camera, and at that price point there will be others, but everyone I know who has used a Panasonic camera have never said a bad word about them. Just nip into your local camera emporium (any left near you?) and handle a few to see which 'feel right'. That's as important as everything else, no use having a great camera if you don't like using it.

It is a good camera, as TK says. I have the Canon S90 (now up to S120 I think) which is a very strong contender as well: at the time I bought it, the Canon fitted into a pocket better than the equivalent LX so a lot of it comes down to handling and personal preference. Larger again, there are the Canon G series but from some reviews the LX beats even them.

I think the LX is as good as it gets for a camera that small

The Sony RX100 (£100 more and now upgraded to Mk11 status) and Olympus XZ-2 (slightly cheaper) to name 2. If you need really pocketable, then add the canon S110, arguably less able but over £100 less and really neat.

In pure pic quality terms, I'd suggest it's Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Canon, but as has been said, it'll matter more that she loves the ergonomics, so a pre christmas try out would be useful if possible.

The RX100 was going for just £300 last Friday on Amazon - back up to £389 now. My missus has an LX5 and takes excellent shots with it. By all accounts, the LX7 is even better as a result of its F1.4 lens.

Is the new Fuji X-Q1 available in the UK yet? It has the gubbins from the X20 inside apparently with nice bright f/1.8 lens. Worth a look?
